A newer standard does not guarantee the on-site experience. Start with actual clients, applications, compliant bands and infrastructure; run representative tests before deciding the upgrade scope.
A Generation Is Not a Frequency Band
| Name | Technology | Checks before deployment |
|---|---|---|
| Wi-Fi 6 | 802.11ax;2.4/5GHz | Clients, density, coverage and uplinks |
| Wi-Fi 6E | 802.11ax extended into 6 GHz | 6 GHz clients and Hong Kong lower-band requirements |
| Wi-Fi 7 | 802.11be | The model's actual bands, features and client compatibility |
Features vary by model; generation names on packaging are not enough. For Hong Kong 6 GHz procurement and operating requirements, see compliance guide。
List the devices that will actually connect
Scanners, POS terminals, industrial devices and laptops may support different bands and security settings. Build a model list and validate representative clients on a small scale; do not assume older devices automatically support 6GHz.
Include the full connection path and ongoing costs
- The AP's power requirements and the switch's PoE budget.
- Network cabling, port speeds, wired uplinks and internet egress.
- Controller or cloud management, licensing, maintenance and update arrangements.
- Installation, cable routes, work windows and access for subsequent maintenance.
Decide Whether to Upgrade Based on the Business Scenario
For meeting rooms, assess simultaneous use; for warehouses, movement workflows; for hotels, rooms and peak periods; for campuses, whole-class devices. Compare old and new options under the same representative conditions, recording improvements and unresolved limitations.
Common questions
Is Wi-Fi 7 always more suitable than Wi-Fi 6 for an office?
Not necessarily. Check client support, local spectrum, applications, uplinks and budget first; with incompatible clients or an uplink bottleneck, higher specifications may not produce a corresponding improvement.
Does 6GHz Pass Through Walls Better?
A new band is not a guarantee of wall penetration. Walls, distances and client capabilities still need measurements; dense sites may require changes to AP placement and coverage design.
